Germany Increases Health Insurance, Pension Wage Thresholds

Germany’s wage thresholds governing health insurance coverage and taxable wages for pension contributions are to increase in 2023, an ordinance published in the country’s gazette Dec. 6 said.

Employees paid more than 66,600 euros (US $69,730.53) in 2023 are not required to be covered by statutory health insurance, up from 64,350 euros in 2022, the ordinance (German) said.

A separate coverage threshold applies to employees who had private health insurance on Dec. 31, 2002, by virtue of earning more than the threshold in effect then, and also serves as the maximum taxable wages for health insurance contributions. This threshold is ...
