Comments on proposed rules to implement a 2021 earned paid-leave law are sought by the Maine Department of Labor.
The state is accepting comments until April 27, the department said March 25. The proposed rules are to take effect Jan. 1, 2021.
The rules (No. 12-170 Ch. 18, Rules Governing Earned Paid Leave) were published March 25 by the department.
Comments on the proposed rules may be submitted online on a department website. Comments also would be accepted by email, at email@example.com, with “earned paid leave” in the subject line; or by sending to the Maine Department of Labor, 54 State House Station, Augusta, Maine 04330-0054.
A remote hearing on the proposed rules is to be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. April 15, the department said.
The department is to have until late August to adopt the rules or release a revised set of requirements, using input from the comments.
The proposed rules are to guide employers more than 10 employees on how to offer earned leave that is to be used for any purpose. Small businesses and seasonal employees that operate fewer than 26 weeks a year are exempt.
Updates on the paid-leave rule may be received by emailing bls.mdol@ maine.gov and requesting placement on a mailing list, the department said.
