Start of Daylight Saving Time Has Implications for Payroll

Daylight saving time will begin on Sunday, March 12 at 2 a.m., and clocks should be set ahead by one hour.

Employees working overnight shifts on March 12 might have one less work hour for that shift than others because of daylight saving time. For example, an employee scheduled to work from midnight to 8 a.m. on Sundays will only work for seven hours on March 12 because clocks were set ahead an hour during the shift.

The Fair Labor Standards Act does not require employers to compensate employees for the lost hour of work resulting from daylight saving time. ...
