Canada Proposes Toxic Label for All Forever Chemicals, Joins EU

Canada proposed Friday labeling as toxic a large group of chemicals known for their persistence in the human body and the environment, a key step toward restricting them.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, also known as PFAS or forever chemicals, meet two criteria for listing chemicals as toxic under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, according to a draft assessment from Environment and Climate Change Canada and Health Canada.

“To reduce the immediate and long-term harmful effects on human health and the environment, important measures are needed to control the use of PFAS,” Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said in a statement.
