New York by 2025 would ban the sale of new clothing containing PFAS, a class of chemicals that have been linked to cancer, according to a bill headed to Gov. Kathy Hochul for her consideration.
The bill (S.1322/A.994) would ban the use of intentionally added per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, in apparel starting in January 2025.
Dubbed “forever chemicals” for their persistence in the environment and presence in the human body, PFAS have been linked to hormone disruptions, certain cancers and other medical conditions, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
