Maryland created civil penalties for child labor violations that equal penalty amounts found in the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, under a bill that went into effect June 1.
SB 831 establishes a penalty of up to $16,035 for employers that improperly hire a minor in a hazardous industry or have them work outside of legal work hours for minors. The penalty amount for willful violations of the child labor law, including interfering with enforcement of the law or giving false information, is up to $72,876 for each violation, under the bill.
