Parter Medical Products Inc., doing business as Parter Sterilization Services, has been cited with 18 violations and proposed penalties of $838,800 by CalOSHA for allegedly failing to protect its employees from overexposure to a toxic chemical, the California’s Department of Industrial Relations said Tuesday.

The company allegedly exposed workers to ethylene oxide above the permissible limit from 2019 to 2022, said the agency. Parter Sterilization Services uses ethylene oxide gas to sterilize medical devices. Chronic exposure to ethylene oxide is associated with cancer, reproductive effects, and neurotoxicity. Humans can’t detect the odor until the concentration exceeds hazardous levels.
