Spotlight on Trusts & Estates Attorney Joseph Bellinghieri (1)

Feb. 4, 2022, 2:00 PMUpdated: Feb. 4, 2022, 7:55 PM

Our Spotlight series highlights the careers and lives of tax professionals across the globe. This week’s Spotlight is on Joseph Bellinghieri, a tax attorney who represents individuals and businesses with a variety of estate, tax, real estate, and business issues at MacElree Harvey in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

Joe is also a CPA and Licensed Pennsylvania Realtor, which gives him the ability to provide his clients with different perspectives on their issues.

Joe has been voted a Super Lawyer by SuperLawyers.com for two years in a row and as Top Lawyer by Main Line Today for six years in a row. He is a member of Chester County Bar Association, Pennsylvania Bar Association, Chester County Estate Planning Council (past president), West Chester Chamber of Commerce (past board member and treasurer), and the Chester County Bar Foundation.

In his free time, Joe loves drinking and making wine (in that order), traveling, bike riding, and hiking. His favorite travel destinations include Thailand, Greece, Hawaii, Peru, Italy, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

1. What’s your official title, and what does it mean? I am an equity partner in the law firm of MacElree Harvey. I head the trusts and estate department. We assist clients with their estate planning needs

2. Free time: book, audiobook, or podcast? Definitely book, and as both of my children are currently in high school, I enjoy reading the books they are assigned and discussing them with them.

3. Tax is a huge subject. What’s your area of special interest? As an estate attorney, I deal mostly with estate taxes. However, I am also a CPA, so I am also interested in and deal with income taxes.

4. What’s the last movie or show that you watched and loved (DVD, Netflix, or in the theater)? I’m still in the process of watching “Yellowstone” and “Ozark.” Both are great shows, in my opinion.

5. What college did you attend, and what did you study? I majored in finance and accounting at Drexel University in Philadelphia—it has been a huge help in my career. Drexel also had a cooperative work program which I found to be very useful and assisted me with obtaining various contacts, which I still use today. I attended George Washington University Law School where I earned my J.D., and I earned my LL.M. in Tax at Georgetown University Law Center.

6. Go to pick-me-up: Coffee or tea? Iced coffee—I am not a sipper, so it needs to be iced coffee.

7. What’s the best tax or financial advice that anyone ever gave you? The earlier you save, the more your savings will grow.

8. If you weren’t working in the tax profession, what would your dream job be? Lead singer of a famous rock bank. Please keep in mind I have been told by my family that I may be the worst singer in the world, but it is my dream, not theirs.

9. If you had the opportunity to make one change in the tax world—an extra credit, a disallowed deduction, whatever—what would it be? I would permanently extend the income tax filing date to May 15.

10. Favorite food, snack, or candy during tax season or other busy time? Anything that goes with red wine.

11. What tax news or move made the most impact on your practice or clients this past year? The possible reduction in the estate tax credit. A lot of my clients wanted to take advantage of the $11,700,000 unified credit—for federal estate and gift tax purposes—before it is reduced.

12. If you received a big tax refund check right now, what would you do with it? Return it—it had to be a mistake
