New Zealand Pursuing Digital Tax Ahead of OECD’s Plan

New Zealand could join the growing list of countries moving ahead with their own plans to tax the digital tech giants alongside waiting for global agreement at the OECD.

The Inland Revenue department released a discussion document June 4 seeking public feedback on two options: New Zealand could either wait for a multilateral OECD resolution, or adopt its own tax on the revenues tech giants make from digital services like monetizing user data and facilitating third-party sales.

The digital tax would hit tech giants including Uber Technologies Inc., eBay Inc., and Facebook Inc., according to the paper.
