Chicago-Area Detainee Gets Partial Win in Burn Injury Appeal

A pretrial detainee at the Cook County, Ill., jail can move forward with a suit alleging that the corrections department failed to protect him from another inmate, who burned him with hot coffee.

But Varren King’s suit over an allegedly undue delay in his medical treatment is over, as he failed to identify any officer who failed to timely refer him for care, the US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit said.

The court partially reversed and partially affirmed a lower court’s summary judgment for the county, Sheriff Thomas Dart, and Officer Richard Szul.
