The EU’s privacy watchdog is calling for data protection authorities, responsible for enforcing privacy laws across the EU, to take the lead in supervising the bloc’s landmark AI regulation.
Data protection authorities are already enforcing the General Data Protection Regulation and other privacy rules when AI systems involve the processing of personal data, Wojciech Wiewiórowski, the European Data Protection Supervisor, said in an opinion posted Tuesday. They also have expertise in assessing the risks of new technologies, like biometric data, and operate independently, he said.
