In 2015, Nikolay Storonsky used about $500,000 he’d earned as a derivatives trader at Lehman Brothers and Credit Suisse to launch a startup intended to supplant the giants of global finance.

“We want to replace banks, simple as that,” the former competitive swimmer said in a promotional video at the time.
