Lawmakers return to Washington in a race to keep the government funded past Sept. 30 while facing a packed fall agenda covering defense policy, nominations, and President Donald Trump’s takeover of the nation’s capital.
The two chambers have passed only a handful of appropriations measures and expect to rely on a stopgap to extend funding at current levels, but they’ll have to iron out the duration of such a bill — and whether to use it to reauthorize other programs that expire this month, from agricultural supports to community health center funds.
