California Democrats are betting a redrawn congressional map might make for some closer, midterm House races but ultimately will allow the party to pick up seats in 2026.
The map, which California’s Democratic legislature was set to advance Thursday and put before voters on a Nov. 4 statewide ballot, is designed to oust five Republicans and fortify swing-district Democrats, countering a Texas Republican proposal endorsed by President Donald Trump.
California Republicans are challenging the map in court. The move will force a shuffling of hundreds of thousands of constituents into new districts in the Golden State.
