Congress Kicks the Farm Bill Can Down the Road for Another Year

House lawmakers voted 222-209 Wednesday night to extend several farm bill programs for one year as part of a broader temporary spending deal to end the longest government shutdown on record.

The legislation (H.R. 5371) headed for President Donald Trump’s desk will prevent decades-old law from taking effect at the start of 2026, triggering outdated commodity price supports that would disrupt markets.
