Democrats Seek to Force Vote on Member Stock Trading Ban (1)

House Democratic leaders encouraged lawmakers to sign a new effort to force a floor vote banning members of Congress and the White House from trading stocks.

Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) unveiled a discharge petition Wednesday that would force a vote on a full ban if it garners 218 signatures. The procedural effort is Democrats’ counter to a Republican leadership-backed bill that would stop lawmakers from buying stocks, but wouldn’t require them to sell off what they already have. Democrats say that bill, which does not include White House officials, does not go far enough.
