House GOP Warns Against ‘Big Mistake’ on Marijuana Reschedule

A large swath of House Republicans are opposed to any attempt by President Donald Trump to loosen federal restrictions on marijuana, calling it a public safety threat and a possible political error.

More than half-a-dozen Hill Republicans expressed concerns over Trump’s Dec. 15 comments that his administration is looking to reclassify marijuana from a Schedule I drug to a less dangerous substance. Schedule I drugs are considered the most potent substances, including heroin and LSD.

“It’s a big mistake,” Rep. Gary Palmer (R-Ala.) said, arguing that THC—the psychoactive compound that produces a high— can induce violent behavior in some users. ...
