House Votes to Expand Treasury Oversight of Safety Net Payments

The House advanced bills Wednesday that would establish a government watchdog for fraudulent payment tracking and provide expanded authority to the Trump administration to withhold safety net funds if there’s suspected fraud.

House lawmakers voted 218-200 to move legislation (H.R. 8464) that would amount to a dramatic expansion of the administration’s authority to disallow federal program payments.

Lawmakers also passed legislation (H.R. 8312) by a vote of 240-181 to create a new government-wide inspector general office for fraud, which would be housed inside the Treasury Department. The office would assume functions, analytics tools, and resources of ...
