Padilla Rules Out California Governor Run to Stay in US Senate

Senator Alex Padilla announced on Tuesday that he will stay in the Senate and not run for governor of California in 2026 amid speculation that he may enter the race.

“It is with a full heart and even more commitment than ever that I’m choosing to not run for governor of California next year,” Padilla (D-Calif.) told reporters outside the Senate floor. “I choose not just to stay in the Senate, I choose to stay in this fight.”

Padilla had been among a list of Democrats to potentially succeed Gavin Newsom (D), who cannot run for another term next year. ...
