Trump-Backed House Bill to Upend Commercial Trucking Moves Ahead

The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee approved legislation on partisan lines Wednesday that would upend commercial trucking by restricting state licenses including for legal non-residents as demanded by President Donald Trump in his State of the Union weeks ago.

Alleged problems with immigrant commercial drivers in Democratic-led states have been a top target of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. Critics say the legislative effort is leveraging the safety issue in service of Trump’s immigration agenda while undermining the transportation panel’s traditional bipartisanship in the process.
