With five working days until Affordable Care Act subsidies dry up, Democrats and moderate Republicans are banking on a holiday miracle.

Swing-district GOP lawmakers have introduced plan after plan to extend the enhanced tax credits, which conservatives oppose, past Dec. 31. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) faces two live discharge petitions — procedural acts of rebellion that allow rank-and-file members to force votes with 218 signatures — on the topic. But time is so short, and GOP leaders have been so resistant to an extension, that it looks less likely by the day.
