AI Bias Rules Come With Backdoor Mandate

AI regulations taking effect this week in California will pressure employers to audit their hiring and recruiting technologies for bias, even though the state is stopping short of issuing an outright mandate.

These rules, some of the earliest in the nation aimed at preventing widely adopted automated tools powered by AI from advancing unseen discrimination in personnel decisions, could matter outside of the Golden State. Lawmakers across the country may see California’s rules as a model. Employers with operations here may decide to apply the state’s standards to parts of their businesses conducted elsewhere, too.
