Republican California Tax Board Chair Wants to Restore Its Role

The sole Republican on the five-member California State Board of Equalization will chair the board in 2025 and wants to try again to restore some of the authority the board lost seven years ago to hear taxpayer appeal cases.

Ted Gaines, who represents 34 central and northern California counties on the elected board that oversees property tax, will also serve as one of three members of the Franchise Tax Board, which oversees income and franchise tax.
