Amazon Defeats Biometric Suit Over John Hancock Customer Calls

Amazon Web Services Inc. and its vendor Pindrop Security Inc. defeated a proposed class action alleging they collected and disclosed consumers’ biometric information without consent in violation of the Illinois biometric-privacy law.

A lower court properly dismissed Pindrop from the lawsuit and granted summary judgment and judgment on the pleadings to Amazon, the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit said Tuesday.

The plaintiffs, customers of Massachusetts financial services company John Hancock, alleged that Amazon and Pindrop violated the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act in processing customer-service calls for the firm.
