The Bank of Japan is coordinating an experiment on the issuance of central bank digital currency with the nation’s three megabanks and regional banks, Nikkei reports, without attribution.
- Trial will start in spring 2023
- Will spend two years verifying whether there are any problems with deposits and withdrawals and decide whether to proceed with a CBDC in 2026
