Offshore oil and gas drillers in the Gulf of Mexico should adopt zero-discharge operations or otherwise face tighter restrictions to protect water quality and endangered species, the Center for Biological Diversity said in a comment letter to the EPA.
A general permit the Environmental Protection Agency proposed to reissue (NPDES General Permit No. GEG460000) would allow oil and gas drillers to continue discharging wastewater under certain conditions into the eastern portion of the Gulf--including the mixture of water and chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing and acid treatments.
