VA Union Sues Trump Administration Over Canceled Contract

Nov. 4, 2025, 10:53 PM UTC

Unions representing US Department of Veterans Affairs workers are suing the Trump administration over the cancellation of collective bargaining agreements.

In a complaint filed Tuesday in the US District Court for the District of Rhode Island, the groups argued that President Donald Trump lacked the authority to void the contract, and that the move was arbitrary and capricious under the Administrative Procedure Act.

The lawsuit challenges Trump’s orders that ended collective bargaining for more than a million workers government-wide in the name of national security. The VA in August terminated collective bargaining agreements for most union employees, excepting about 4,000 public safety officers.

It comes days after unions representing workers at the Departments of Energy and Interior filed similar lawsuits.

The case is AFGE v. US Department of Veterans Affairs, D.R.I., 1:25-cv-00583-MRD-PAS, complaint filed 11/4/25
