The Supreme Court is considering overruling or curtailing the Chevron doctrine, which for the last 40 years has empowered federal agencies to interpret ambiguous laws when issuing rules.
The deference by federal courts to agency expertise became a regulatory bedrock, and a reversal would likely prompt a slew of new challenges to rules related to energy, health care, tax, and other policy areas.
While the high court has largely ignored Chevron in its own rulings in recent years, district and appeals courts still rely on the doctrine.
