Las Vegas Workers Approve Labor Deal With Caesars Entertainment

Nov. 21, 2023, 10:19 AM UTC

Las Vegas hospitality workers ratified a five-year labor agreement with Caesars Entertainment Inc. on Monday, securing raises and protections against artificial intelligence and automation.

The deal with Culinary Workers Union Local 226 covers 10,000 Caesars employees. It reinstates daily hotel room cleaning, reversing a pandemic-era trend nationwide that resulted in job cuts. The contract also provides advance warning of new technology in the workplace and expanded strike rights.

The proposal passed with 99% of support of those who voted, the union announced on X, formerly Twitter, late Monday.About 25,000 more workers at MGM Resorts International and Wynn Resorts Ltd. are scheduled to vote on similar agreements Tuesday and Wednesday.

The union has not released details of the wage increases but has said they are the biggest in the union’s 88-year history.

The three companies’ deals with the union earlier this month narrowly averted a city-wide strike ahead of a Formula One Grand Prix that was forecast to inject nearly $1.3 billion into the local economy. Las Vegas is also set to host the Super Bowl in February, bringing another $500 million in potential tourism revenue.

It was the latest in a series of high-profile labor disputes that rocked nearly every corner of the economy this summer and fall, from actors and writers in Hollywood to auto workers in Detroit. Workers were experiencing newfound leverage from a tight labor market, with employers desperate to fill jobs amid higher corporate earnings as the economy rebounded from the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Las Vegas workers also won the right to strike in support of nonunion restaurant workers on casino properties, paving the way for smaller but perhaps more frequent work stoppages in the future.
