ChampionX Revives Probe to Bar Imports of Rival Diamond Cutters

The Federal Circuit reversed a trade agency’s invalidation of a patented composition called a polycrystalline diamond compact, which is used to make drill bits for the oil and gas industry.

The US International Trade Commission incorrectly determined US Synthetic Corp.'s patent was ineligible when the patent’s claims are in fact “directed to a specific, non-abstract composition of matter” when US Supreme Court precedent is properly applied, according to a precedential opinion issued Thursday in the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
