A federal judge said looming deadlines and the US Supreme Court’s inaction forced her to allow South Carolina to use a redistricting map the court previously found disadvantaged Black voters.

With “the primary election procedures rapidly approaching, the appeal before the Supreme Court still pending, and no remedial plan in place, the ideal must bend to the practical,” US District Judge Mary Geiger Lewis said in her ruling on Thursday.
