Rhode Island Adopts NextGen Bar Exam Beginning in July 2028

Rhode Island will transition to delivery of the NextGen Uniform Bar Examination beginning in July 2028, the state Supreme Court announced.

The Ocean State is the 40th jurisdiction that has switched to the NextGem exam, which is still in development by the National Conference of Bar Examiners. The new test will cover both foundational “concepts and principles” and “lawyering skills.”

  • Aspiring attorneys will be tested on “civil procedure, contract law, evidence, torts, business associations, constitutional law, criminal law, and real property
