BGOV Bill Analysis: H.R. 1107, Virtual VA Prescriptions

Veterans Affairs Department physicians would be able to prescribe medications via telemedicine, even if they haven’t conducted an in-person patient examination, under H.R. 1107.

The bill would make permanent a pandemic-era exemption that allowed VA health-care professionals to remotely dispense medically necessary controlled substances to veterans, according to the House Veterans Affairs Committee report on the measure. The exemption is set to expire at the end of 2025, which would require Veterans Affairs Department health-care professionals to restart conducting at least one in-person patient medical evaluation before issuing a prescription for a controlled substance.
