BGOV OnPoint: Senate to Put Stamp on Republican Border Bill

The fate of billions of dollars in new spending for border and immigration enforcement is now in the hands of Senate Republicans, who are largely aligned with their House colleagues on boosting those funds.

The House passed its sweeping GOP reconciliation measure (H.R. 1; see BGOV Bill Analysis) by a 215-214 vote on May 22. While the Senate is likely to change other parts of the House-passed legislation, leaders in both chambers are seeking similar spending levels for the package’s border security and immigration sections.
