Even states known for their above-average health care systems struggle with deep racial and ethnic divides when it comes to access, quality of care and outcomes, according to a new report from the nonprofit foundation Commonwealth Fund.
The extensive study scored each state and Washington, DC, on health system performance and found Americans of color received inferior care across categories compared to White Americans. The data was even more stark on preventable deaths: Black Americans and American Indians on average are more likely to die from treatable conditions than other groups.
