McDermott, CB&I Settle Black Worker’s Race Discrimination Suit

McDermott Inc. and its subsidiary Chicago Bridge & Iron LLC settled a lawsuit with a former worker, who claimed that they discriminated against him because he is Black.

After settlement negotiations, the parties filed a joint stipulation of dismissal of the suit Oct. 22, which Judge Brian A. Jackson granted with prejudice Nov. 4. Louis Smith filed a proposed class action and individual claims in the US District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana, alleging that during a 2016 workforce reduction, the companies laid off 100 employees, and that 60% of them were Black.
