Johnson Faces Tricky Path to Pass Senate DHS Deal in House (1)

Conservative hardliners on the House Freedom Caucus panned the Senate’s late-night vote to fund most of the Department of Homeland Security except some immigration functions, while House Democrats appeared to largely support it.

HFC Chairman Andy Harris (R-Md.) and members of the hard-right group told reporters Friday that they would oppose the Senate legislation, pressing Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to hold firm against the carve-outs. To advance it through the House, Johnson would either need to pass a party-line rule, which would be difficult, or pass it with a two-thirds majority, which House rules prohibit on a Friday.
