IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel Exits Agency After Two Years (1)

IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel will step down from the post Jan. 20, conceding to President-elect Donald Trump, who said he would replace him.

Werfel will be succeeded in the interim by Deputy Commissioner Douglas O’Donnell, a career IRS employee who has stepped in in an acting capacity under previous administrations.

The IRS has made strides under Werfel to improve customer service and upgrade technology, with the extra tens of billion in cash from the 2022 tax-and-climate law following decades of underfunding. Now, the agency stares down more funding cuts with a Republican-controlled Senate and House.
