In just a decade, El Salvador has gone from murder capital of the world to become a nation where mass incarceration and hardline policing have brought peace to the streets.

On Monday, Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele will have a chance to take a victory lap in the Oval Office with US President Donald Trump, who is sending alleged migrant gang members to Bukele’s mega-jail for a fee over the objections of some US judges.
