Aggrieved Remote Georgetown Students Get First Nod in Settlement

Former Georgetown University students were given preliminary approval Tuesday to resolve their claims that the school breached its contract with them when it shifted to fully remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Judge Trevor N. McFadden said the proposed class of students’ tendered settlement agreement with the university likely satisfies the fairness, reasonableness, and adequacy standards under Rule 23(e)(2). But he pointed out that the parties will need to discuss further settlement details at an upcoming hearing to quell some of the judge’s potential concerns, McFadden wrote.
