California Uber, Lyft Driver Unionization Bill Sent to Governor

Drivers for Uber Technologies Inc. and Lyft Inc. will be able to unionize and collectively bargain on industry-wide pay and benefit guarantees under legislation cleared by the California Legislature on Tuesday.

The Assembly voted 56-14 to approve the bill (AB 1340) that would give around 800,000 rideshare drivers a path to organize and collectively bargain. The change would amount to the single largest expansion of private sector collective bargaining in California history, according to the Service Employees International Union, which backed the bill.
