German Finance Chief Sees Chance for Stronger Euro Role in Trade

US President Donald Trump’s assault on trade is a chance for euro-region governments to give Europe’s common currency stronger weight in global commerce, according to German Finance Minister Joerg Kukies.

Speaking to Bloomberg TV on Friday in Warsaw, Kukies said talks on free-trade agreements are already well advanced between the European Union and nations including Indonesia and Malaysia and those should now be accelerated.

“We should start by lowering tariffs and getting free-trade agreements and that will strengthen the role of the euro,” said Kukies, who is meeting EU counterparts in the Polish capital through Saturday.
