Ireland to Bolster Nordic, Baltics Alliance to Gain EU Clout

Ireland is looking for allies further east in the European Union to gain more leverage in the bloc at a time when Dublin’s ties with the US are likely to weaken with the incoming Donald Trump administration.

The Irish government is preparing to formalize its existing partnership with the Nordic EU members to also include Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, three states in the Baltic region, people familiar with the matter said. The country has already started participating in some Nordic-Baltic meetings at an EU level and is now looking to create more enduring relationships.
