Lai’s Approval Rating Falls to New Low as Policies Divide Taiwan

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te’s approval rating has dropped to 32%, marking the lowest point since he assumed office nearly a year ago, according to the latest poll by local media outlet TVBS.

That’s down from 40% in the previous survey in March. While his one-year approval is slightly better than Tsai Ing-wen’s 28% at the same point, it trails behind his predecessors including Chen Shui-bian and Ma Ying-jeou.

Public opinion is split on his security policies, with 46% in favor and 46% against. Nearly half of respondents believe Taiwan is heading in the wrong direction.
