US container imports dropped almost 23% in the first quarter from a year earlier, returning to pre-pandemic levels after consumer demand and inventory worries boosted global commerce over the past two years, new figures showed.
Inbound volumes from January through March were 5.66 million containers measured in 20-foot equivalent units, compared with 7.34 million a year earlier, according to figures released Tuesday by Canada-based logistics company Descartes Systems Group. The average first-quarter volume in the three years through 2019 was 5.39 million.
