President Donald Trump has been putting India’s ties with both the US and Russia to the test as he pressures the South Asian nation to stop buying Russian oil.

In late August, he imposed a 25% “secondary tariff” on Indian exports as punishment — on top of a 25% “reciprocal tariff” already in place under his broader trade rebalancing push. Six weeks later, Trump claimed Prime Minister Narendra Modi had agreed to halt Russian crude imports.
