Apartment Management Company Sheds Junk Fee Proposed Class Suit

Camden Development Inc., a widespread apartment management company, convinced a federal judge that apartment renters in a proposed class action couldn’t show various fees were harmful.

Maryland renters John Hall and Monica Bahena said that application, utility, technology package, and community fees were deceptively advertised and Camden knew they were improperly charged. But the renters lacked standing for their claims, the US District Court for the District of Maryland said Wednesday.

The renters couldn’t show causation with regard to the application fee because they didn’t look at Camden’s website and instead applied through Zillow, Judge Deborah K. Chasanow said. That ...
