BGOV Bill Analysis: H.R. 859, Disclosing Smart Device Cameras

Manufacturers of devices that contain a camera or microphone and can connect to the internet would have to clearly disclose those features to consumers before purchase under H.R. 859.

The measure addresses concerns about household devices—including refrigerators, dryers, and dishwashers— that could be considered “spy appliances,” according to a Feb. 6 news release from Rep. Russ Fulcher (R-Idaho), the bill’s sponsor.

A device marketed as a telecommunications device, camera, microphone, laptop, tablet, or any device reasonably assumed to include a camera or microphone wouldn’t be subject to this disclosure.
