The Federal Circuit affirmed decisions of the Patent Trial and Appeal Board that challenged claims of Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Ethanol Boosting Systems LLC’s patents that propose an optimized fuel management system for internal combustion engines are unpatentable as obvious over prior art, in inter partes reviews by Ford Motor Co. The court said that the board’s claim constructions and obviousness findings are supported by substantial evidence.
