Michigan could become the first state to make tech companies liable for preventing cyberattacks and other public safety threats enabled by artificial intelligence under a measure that has attracted bipartisan support.
AI developers would have to develop safety plans, protect whistleblowers, and retain third-party auditors under the bill (H.B. 4668) introduced June 24 by state Rep. Sarah Lightner (R). Similar legislation (A.B. 6453B) cleared the Democratic-controlled New York Legislature in June and awaits action by Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) before the end of the year.
